To be fair: Obsidian Publish is built by the Obsidian team and is a strong choice when you want your notes to read like a conventional website. If the connections between your notes are the point, that is what Vault Sphere is built for.
FAQ
Straight answers
Is my vault uploaded when I open it?
No. Opening a vault reads the folder locally in your browser, and all parsing and rendering happen on your machine. Nothing is sent to our servers until you press publish. You can explore your own vault without ever creating an account.
What exactly gets uploaded when I publish?
Your markdown files, bundled into a single JSON document, plus the site name
and publish time. Attachments and images are not uploaded in this version.
Folders like .obsidian, .trash, and
.git are always excluded and never leave your machine.
Can I unpublish?
Yes. Delete a site any time and the published bundle is removed from storage. The link stops working immediately.
Does it work with any Obsidian vault?
It works with any folder of markdown files, whether or not it is an Obsidian vault. Wiki-links, tags, and frontmatter are understood. Community plugins and Dataview queries are not executed; your notes render as markdown.
Is there an Obsidian plugin?
Yes. Vault Sphere Publish is a free, open source (MIT) plugin that publishes
from inside Obsidian: your whole vault, or only the notes you flag with
publish: true. It contains no telemetry and only talks to the
network when you run the publish command.
